Choose 2 examples of animals and describe how their meals are prepared?
Bushbabby(Dobby):
40ml yogart/mealworms/bean sprouts
16:00 each day
Serval kitten(big boy):
40 pellets of IAMs soaked in luke warm water, water drained
09:00, 12:00, 16:00, 20:00, 04:00 are the feeding times each day.
Why is it prepared as such?
Dobby is a Bush baby and also nocturnal. So he would naturally only eat late afternoon or during the night. He sleeps mostly during the day. He needs loads of proteins which the mealworms provide. As for the yogurt, it is filled with probiotics which are good for his stomach and metabolism.
The serval kittens eats the IAMs which are loaded with all the vitamins and minerals it needs to be healthy, at least 5 times a day because it is still in the growing process. In nature the mother would feed it as much as well. Each portion is correctly calculated for that kitten’s body mass and needs.
Explain why food is portioned?
all of the animals’s food is portioned according to its body mass and age. If an animal’s food is not controlled the animal might become overly-obese or dehydrate due to dihorea. Some animals don’t get enough nutrients or food to sustain a healthy balance and suffers of mal nutrition. That is why it is important to monitor every animals portion as to keep it healthy and balanced
Explain the cleaning procedure of the food preparation equipmentand why? Ie: table, knife, chopping boards.
Before starting to prepare foods, you must check that the knifes, chopping boards and table is clean and sterilized. Remembering not to cross contaminate your workplace area’s. sanitize your hands before touching any meat or fruits (depending on which you will be working, as you cant work on both stations) lay your food products on the table and start preparing. After preperations, move food to a secure place or give to a group of people to start feeding processand remember to pack dishes according to classifications into the sink. (don’t mix fruit and milk with the meat). Take a wet (meat or fruit) cloth and wipe table surface of any particles or peels. Spray savlon across surface and dry with a semi dry cloth. Washing meat utensils with difrent brushes and water than fruit and milk dishes and utensils.
Why do certain animals get fed at certain times? Example: nocturnal factors?
Some species are nocturnal and some are diurnal, indicating that their feeding patterns would change. When animals are more active at night they would get food later in after noons as not to disturb their sleeping patterns. In general young eats more and frequently where as adults eats less frequently but bigger portions. When animals are ill or has diarrhea we would change their meals and add certain supplements as well
Explain why personal hygiene is so important at the WLC?
When working with animals, a person must stress the factor of sanitizing and anti-crosscontamination, as animals are easly affected by bacteria and human illnesses. It is important to wash hands as frequently as one can and also focus on washing hands after bathroom breaks, smoking, working with other animals, washing dishes, cleaning other cages, working with foods and also when interacting with ill animals. It is also important to apply correct personal hygiene like clipping nails, trimming hairs, balanced diets and staying healthy and bathing daily if not MORE!
